Honda Hybrid Models
Honda is doing its part to help the world become more eco-friendly with its lineup of hybrid vehicles. Honda’s engineers have implemented an innovative two-motor hybrid system across their hybrid lineup. This system uses the first motor to accelerate the vehicle from a stopped position, while the second motor starts the engine and charges the other motor during driving.
Atkinson Cycle Engine
The hybrid’s engine uses the Atkinson cycle combustion sequence to generate maximum power with minimal fuel consumption. With the Atkinson cycle, the intake valves briefly stay open during the compression stroke to release some air out of the cylinders and into the intake manifold. This lowers the compression ratio and enables the engine to start quickly and smoothly.
VTEC is a system that Honda has implemented to counteract the reduced power from the Atkinson cycle engine. VTEC electronically controls valve timing with camshafts containing two sets of lobes. The first set of lobes is for the Atkinson cycle, and the other is for regular combustion.
All Honda hybrids come equipped with an air-cooled lithium-ion battery pack that fits between the rear seat and the trunk. This type of battery is smaller and leaves more room in the trunk compared to conventional battery packs. This battery can be fully charged in just 2.5 hours with a level 2 240-volt charger and in 12 hours with any compatible 120-volt wall power outlet. This compact battery is also backed by Honda’s generous 8-year high-voltage battery limited warranty.
2019 Accord Hybrid
The Accord Hybrid comes in a single trim configuration. This eco-friendly sedan has an in-line four-cylinder engine and AC synchronous permanent magnet electric motor paired to an E-CVT transmission with Sport Mode. The two-motor hybrid system produces 143 horsepower and 129 lb.-ft. of torque. The Accord Hybrid also delivers an EPA-estimated 48 mpg both around town and on the highway. It’s covered by Honda’s 8-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery limited warranty.
2019 Clarity Hybrid
The Clarity Plug-in Hybrid is available in a Base trim and Touring trim. Since it is a plug-in hybrid, it uses a high-capacity battery for all-electric driving and a gas-powered engine as a reserve when the charge is low; it produces 212 total system horsepower. Since you can conveniently charge this car at home, you can run on all electric if your trips fall within the class-leading 47-mile all-electric range. When you need to go a few more miles, you can depend on the 340-mile combined gas-electric range rating. Honda also includes an 8-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery limited warranty on this car.
2019 Insight Hybrid
The Insight is available in three trims – LX, EX, and Touring – all of which get an in-line four-cylinder engine and AC synchronous permanent-magnet electric motor that produce 151 total system horsepower and 197 lb.-ft. of torque; it is paired with an E-CVT transmission. This exceptional hybrid delivers an EPA-estimated 55 mpg city and 49 mpg highway with its 10.6-gallon fuel tank. Like all other Honda hybrid models, it includes an 8-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery limited warranty.
